Tasamjdan, Belgrade, September 5. 2008.
The Legendary American singer Iggy Pop and his band “The Stooges“ will perform at Tasmajdan stadium in Belgrade on September 5 at the opening of this year’s Jelen Pivo Live Festival!
James Newell Osterberg, better known as Iggy Pop, was born in 1947 in Muskegen in Michigan and was raised in a trailer park. He began his music career playing drums in several high-school bands. After he left studies at the University of Michigan, he moved to Chicago and formed the Psychedelic Stooges together with Ron and Scott Asheton and Dave Alexander.
After “The Doors“ concert held in 1967 in Michigen, Iggy was amazed by Jim Morrison's performance, whch inspired the young Pop to push the boundaries of stage performance. Pop later became famous for inventing the stage-dive and in the following decades he shocked the audience with rolling around in broken glass, exposing himself to the crowd, and vomiting on stage.
Under the new name “The Stooges“, the band released two albums which did not sell well, and the group disbanded because of Pop's growing heroin addiction. With David Bowie's help, the band reunited and in 1973 recorded a punk-rock album “Raw Power“. However, “The Stooges” disbanded again in 1975. Iggy was unable to control his drug use and checked himself into a mental institution. Togteher with Bowie, Iggy moved to Berlin in 1976, where he recorded two excellent albums- “The Idiot“ and “Lust for Life“-which are considered to be his best solo records. David Bowie helped Pop in producing and writing songs and played keyboards in Pop's live performances, some of which are featured on the album TV Eye (1978).
In early 1980’s, after several commercially unsuccessful releases, Iggy’s fortunes changed. David Bowie recorded a cover of the song "China Girl” which became a worldwide hit single. A the co-writer of the song, Pop received substantial royalties and for the first time he was financially secure, at least for the short term. This enabled him to take a three-year break, during which he overcame his heroin addiction, took acting classes and got married. In late 1986, he released his best-selling album “Blah Blah Blah“ with a hit “Real Wild Child“.
Four years later, Iggy recorded the album “Brick by Brick“ on which he collaborated with Slash and Duff McKagan from “Guns N' Roses” and the band “The B-52s”. The most famous hits from this album are “Home“, “Candy“ and “Livin’ On the Edge of the Night“.
In the course of the following ten years, Pop released very successful records and in 1992 composed music with Goran Bregovic for Emir Kusturica’s film “Arizona Dream”. After the album “Skull Ring“ from 2003, Iggy decided to unite the band “The Stooges“ once again, with which he held an unforgettable concert at the EXIT festival in 2004.
In Belgrade, Iggy Pop and “The Stooges“ will promote their new album “The Weirdness“ released last year. The premiere of the film “The Passenger” is expected to be at the end of this year, in which Elijah Wood plays Iggy Pop at younger age…
